Mining Litecoin in 2026: Scrypt ASICs and Merged-Mining Economics
Litecoin (LTC) is the longest-running altcoin still secured by proof-of-work — operational since October 2011. Mining LTC in 2026 has one defining advantage: merged mining with Dogecoin means every Scrypt hash you compute earns rewards on two chains simultaneously. This guide covers how Scrypt mining actually works, the hardware in 2026, and when LTC/DOGE economics beat Bitcoin.
The Scrypt + merged-mining mechanism
Litecoin uses the Scrypt hash function — designed in 2009 by Colin Percival as a memory-hard alternative to SHA-256. The intent was ASIC resistance through memory bandwidth requirements; ASICs ultimately did emerge for Scrypt, but the path took years longer than for SHA-256, and per-watt efficiency converged more slowly.
The strategic upside today is merged mining. In 2014, Dogecoin’s developers added an auxiliary proof-of-work mechanism: Dogecoin’s network accepts Litecoin’s mining work as valid proof for its own blocks. From the miner’s perspective:
- Every Scrypt hash counts toward both LTC and DOGE blocks.
- Pool fees are paid once.
- Payouts arrive in both currencies, proportional to your hash rate.
Combined revenue periodically exceeds equivalent-watt Bitcoin yields, especially during DOGE price spikes (Twitter-driven or otherwise). At baseline conditions, Scrypt is competitive but not dominant.
Current Scrypt hardware
The 2026 Scrypt flagship landscape:
| Model | Hash rate | Power | J/MH | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bitmain Antminer L9 | ~17 GH/s | 3,400 W | 0.20 | Commercial-grade flagship |
| Fluminer L3 | 9.5 GH/s | 3,420 W | 0.36 | Alternative to Bitmain; permissive firmware |
| Fluminer L2 | 1.2 GH/s | 280 W | 0.23 | Home-tier on standard wall outlet |
| Hosted Fluminer L1 Pro | 6 GH/s | included | — | 12-month hosted package |
The L9 wins on raw efficiency. The L3 wins on price-per-unit and firmware flexibility — useful in fleets where you want to under-volt for marginal efficiency gains. The L2 is the home-deployable option (single 110V/20A circuit, 60 dB acoustic envelope) for buyers who don’t have industrial electrical service.
Network economics
Litecoin block reward at the time of writing: 6.25 LTC per block, halving every 840,000 blocks (~4 years). Dogecoin block reward: 10,000 DOGE per block, fixed (no halving). Block time: 2.5 minutes for both.
At typical 2026 conditions:
- Antminer L9 daily revenue: ~$8–12 (LTC + DOGE combined, varies with prices)
- Power cost at $0.06/kWh: ~$4.90/day
- Net: ~$3–7/day per unit
Run our profitability calculator for current rates against your specific electricity cost. Note: the calculator is currently SHA-256-specific; for Scrypt math, multiply hash rate × LTC daily reward share, plus the DOGE proportional share, minus electricity.
When Scrypt beats SHA-256
Three conditions where Scrypt mining outperforms equivalent-watt SHA-256:
- DOGE price spike. The most common driver. When DOGE doubles in a week (Elon Musk tweet, meme-coin rotation, etc.), Scrypt economics temporarily blow past Bitcoin economics.
- Bitcoin difficulty surge without price follow-through. If BTC difficulty climbs 10%+ in a single adjustment without BTC price catching up, SHA-256 net margins compress while Scrypt holds steady.
- Post-halving compression. The 2024 Bitcoin halving cut SHA-256 revenue per TH/s in half. Scrypt has no aligned halving cycle, so the relative attractiveness shifts.
Outside these windows, SHA-256 is generally more profitable per watt — Bitcoin’s market depth and price stability give it an edge.
Practical considerations
Pool selection
F2Pool, AntPool, Litecoinpool, and ViaBTC all support Scrypt + merged mining. Foundry doesn’t yet. Setup is identical to Bitcoin — see our mining pools guide for the underlying mechanics.
Firmware
Bitmain L-series firmware is closed and signed. Fluminer L-series allows under-volting and custom pool configs. See the firmware comparison for trade-offs.
Treasury management
You’ll receive payouts in both LTC and DOGE. Decision: hold both, sell DOGE on receipt (high volatility, weaker hold case), or sell both daily for cashflow. Most operators sell DOGE daily and hold or sell LTC strategically.
The honest summary
Scrypt is a reasonable secondary algorithm for operators who already mine SHA-256 and want diversification, or for buyers in jurisdictions where LTC/DOGE liquidity is better than BTC’s. It’s not a primary choice for most first-time miners — the volatility of DOGE pricing makes returns less predictable than Bitcoin’s.
