“Home mining” covers wildly different setups: a desktop miner in a study, a flagship rig in a detached garage, a small fleet in a backyard shed. The right hardware depends on which one you actually have. This guide breaks down the four practical home tiers and what to buy in each.

What home miners share — and what they don’t

Home setups face three constraints that industrial deployments don’t:

  • Single-circuit power: most homes have 15–20A 120V branches and maybe one 240V outlet (laundry/HVAC). Industrial miners need a dedicated 240V/30A circuit you may have to install.
  • Acoustic limits: 75 dB sustained from a vacuum-cleaner-loud rig is incompatible with bedrooms, neighbors, or quiet residential streets.
  • Ambient temperature variability: garages hit 35°C+ in summer and 5°C in winter. Industrial sites are climate-controlled; home setups aren’t.

The right miner for “home” depends on which constraint dominates your situation.

Tier 1: Desktop / learning ($150–$400)

For: people who want to learn how mining works without rebuilding their electrical panel. Outputs: a few cents to a few dollars of revenue per day. Realistic motivation: education, hobbyist novelty, lottery-style solo mining.

Recommended:

  • Canaan Avalon Nano 3S — 6 TH/s at 140 W. Plugs into a wall outlet; runs near-silent; warm-not-hot exhaust. Fits on a desk. Pays back over years, not months — but that’s not why you buy it.
  • Bitaxe / NerdMiner — open-source single-chip rigs at 0.4–2.5 TH/s. We don’t sell these (small community-built market), but they’re the cheapest entry point into “I am running an actual ASIC.”

Skip everything else in this tier. Anything between 6 TH/s and 30 TH/s is awkwardly sized — too small for meaningful revenue, too power-hungry for a wall outlet.

For: serious home miners who don’t have an outbuilding. Single 240V circuit, indoors-but-quiet-ish (garage, basement, dedicated closet with ventilation). Outputs: $1–3/day net at moderate electricity rates.

  • Canaan Avalon Q — 90 TH/s at 1,675 W on 220V single-phase. Quieter than full-flagship rigs (~65 dB). Designed specifically for home deployment in jurisdictions with 220V residential power (most of Europe, Asia).

The Mini3 wins for North American homes (works on existing circuits). The Avalon Q wins where 220V is standard. Both are profitable at sub-$0.06/kWh and break-even at $0.08–0.10/kWh — meaning for many residential power rates, this tier needs to be paired with subsidized power (e.g., overnight time-of-use rates) to net positive.

Tier 3: Garage / outbuilding ($1,500–$3,500)

For: detached garage, backyard shed, basement with sound treatment. Has dedicated 240V/30A circuit. Tolerates 75 dB acoustic envelope. Outputs: $3–5/day net at moderate electricity rates.

Recommended:

  • Bitmain Antminer S21++ — 235 TH/s at 3,290 W. Mid-tier flagship; best dollar-per-capex efficiency in the catalog. Mainstream choice for a single-rig home setup.
  • Canaan Avalon A1566 — 185 TH/s at 3,330 W. Older silicon (18 J/TH vs the S21++’s 14 J/TH) but $400 cheaper. If your power is below $0.05/kWh, faster payback wins; if above $0.07/kWh, the S21++’s efficiency advantage compounds faster.

This tier is the most common “home mining” setup in practice. You need: a detached space (or sound treatment), a dedicated 30A breaker on a 240V circuit (electrician likely required), active ventilation (~3,500 W of continuous heat is non-trivial), and tolerance for ongoing operational management (firmware updates, periodic cleaning, occasional fan replacements).

Tier 4: Premium home flagship ($3,000–$10,000)

For: serious home operators with industrial-grade infrastructure (purpose-built outbuilding, climate control, sound dampening). Outputs: $5–9/day net.

Recommended:

  • Bitmain Antminer S21 XP — 270 TH/s at 13.5 J/TH. The default flagship for most setups in 2026. Best efficiency-to-price in air-cooled hardware.
  • Canaan Avalon A16XP — 300 TH/s at 15 J/TH. Higher hash density than the S21 XP at slightly worse efficiency. Manufacturer diversification choice if you’re already running Bitmain in a fleet.

Most “home miners” should aim at Tier 2 or Tier 3:

  • If your home has only standard residential circuits and you can’t run a dedicated 240V/30A line, stay at Tier 2 (Avalon Q or Mini3). You will not run a flagship S21 XP on existing wiring.
  • If you have a detached space and dedicated electrical service, move to Tier 3 (S21++ or A1566) for meaningful daily revenue.
  • If you have purpose-built infrastructure and are operating at scale, you’re not really a “home miner” anymore — you’re running a small industrial site, and Tier 4 hardware fits.
