Antminer S21 XP vs S21++ vs S21: Which Variant
Bitmain ships at least four S21 variants in 2026, plus immersion and hydro versions. They look similar on spec sheets and confusingly similar in branding. This guide explains what’s actually different between the S21, S21++, S21 XP, S21 XP+ Hyd, and S21 XP Immersion — and which to buy for your situation.
The variants at a glance
| Model | Hash rate | Power | J/TH | Cooling | Price (our markup) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| S21 | 200 TH/s | 3,500 W | 17.5 | Air | $1,580 |
| S21++ | 235 TH/s | 3,290 W | 14.0 | Air | $1,612 |
| S21 XP | 270 TH/s | 3,645 W | 13.5 | Air | $3,264 |
| S21 XP+ Hyd | 480 TH/s | 5,760 W | 12.0 | Liquid | $9,639 |
| S21 XP Immersion | 300 TH/s | 4,050 W | 13.5 | Immersion-prepped | $3,754 |
S21 vs S21++: the value-tier choice
The S21 (base) is the older silicon, available cheaply in secondary markets. The S21++ is the value-tier flagship with notably better efficiency at a small price premium.
Numbers tell most of the story:
- S21 vs S21++: same chassis, similar power, but 17.5% more hash rate and 20% better efficiency on the ++.
- Price difference: ~$30 USD (essentially the same).
- Decision: always buy S21++ over S21. The efficiency gain pays back in a few weeks of operation.
The S21 base is only worth considering at deep refurbished discounts where the price gap exceeds the efficiency-driven payback period (typically requires the S21 to cost <50% of S21++).
S21++ vs S21 XP: the mainstream upgrade question
This is where most operators actually decide. Both are air-cooled, both fit standard rack space, both run on similar electrical infrastructure.
| Comparison | S21++ | S21 XP |
|---|---|---|
| Hash rate | 235 TH/s | 270 TH/s (15% more) |
| J/TH efficiency | 14.0 | 13.5 (3.6% better) |
| Daily revenue (typical) | $8.30 | $9.85 (18% more) |
| Daily power cost ($0.06/kWh) | $4.74 | $5.25 |
| Daily net | $3.56 | $4.60 |
| Annual net (per unit) | $1,300 | $1,680 |
| Premium for XP | — | +$1,652 |
| Years to pay back the XP premium | — | ~4.3 years |
The XP costs about $1,650 more for $380/year additional net revenue at $0.06/kWh power. Payback on the premium: ~4.3 years.
This is longer than typical hardware lifecycle. For the XP to be worth it, one of these conditions has to hold:
- Lower electricity rate: at $0.04/kWh, the XP premium pays back in ~2 years (efficiency advantage compounds at lower power costs)
- Higher BTC price: at $120k+ BTC, daily revenue is higher and the absolute dollar advantage of the XP grows
- You believe you’ll resell at premium: the XP holds value better than the ++ because newer-gen silicon stays competitive longer
Decision rule:
- $0.06–0.10/kWh power: S21++ is the smarter buy. Better dollar-per-capex ratio.
- Sub-$0.06/kWh power: S21 XP. The efficiency advantage compounds and the premium pays back faster.
- Above $0.10/kWh: don’t run home. Use hosted mining; the variant choice doesn’t matter much because hosting costs dominate.
S21 XP+ Hyd: when hydro pays back
The hydro flagship is the highest-efficiency air-cooled-equivalent in the lineup at 12 J/TH. It costs nearly 3x the air-cooled S21 XP.
Hydro requires liquid cooling infrastructure (heat exchanger, manifold, coolant) that typically adds another $2,000–4,000 per rig. Total infrastructure capex for a hydro rig is therefore ~$11,500–13,500 vs $3,264 for an air-cooled XP — about 3.5x.
The hydro rig produces 480 TH/s vs the XP’s 270 TH/s — 78% more hash. After accounting for higher power, the hydro nets ~$9.20/day vs the XP’s $4.60 — exactly 2x.
So you spend 3.5x to get 2x daily revenue. The hydro rig only makes sense when:
- You’re operating at scale (5+ units) and the per-rig hydro infrastructure cost amortizes
- Your power is exceptionally cheap (sub-$0.045/kWh)
- You have ambient temperature constraints that air cooling can’t manage
For single-rig home buyers: skip the hydro. The capex doesn’t pay back at home scale.
S21 XP Immersion: when factory-prep matters
Same silicon as the S21 XP, but with cold-plate-bonded chips designed for single-phase dielectric immersion tanks. Modest hash bump (300 vs 270 TH/s) due to better thermal management of immersion vs air cooling.
Use case: operators who already have immersion infrastructure and want hardware that’s factory-prepped (warranty-supported when immersed). Buyers without existing immersion tanks should not buy the Immersion variant — buy the regular XP and air-cool it.
What we’d recommend
For 90% of buyers: S21 XP. It’s the default flagship. For the value-conscious 10%: S21++.
Skip S21 base unless deeply discounted. Skip S21 XP+ Hyd unless you’re at scale or have unusual ambient constraints. Skip S21 XP Immersion unless you have existing immersion tanks.
