Best Bitcoin (BTC) Miners — SHA-256 ASICs
Bitcoin (BTC) is mined using the SHA-256 algorithm — the original proof-of-work design Satoshi Nakamoto chose in 2009. After 15 years of ASIC evolution, every serious Bitcoin miner runs purpose-built SHA-256 silicon, not general-purpose CPUs or GPUs.

How SHA-256 mining works
Each miner brute-forces nonces against block headers, computing SHA-256 hashes until one falls below the network’s difficulty target. The miner that finds a valid hash first wins the block reward (3.125 BTC after the 2024 halving) plus transaction fees. Difficulty adjusts every 2,016 blocks to keep block production at roughly 10 minutes.
Modern Bitcoin ASICs produce 150–500 trillion hashes per second (TH/s) per unit. Network hash rate is measured in exahashes per second (EH/s = 1 million TH/s). Your share of block rewards equals your hash rate divided by the network total.
Economics in 2026
The April 2024 halving cut the block subsidy in half, doubling the hash-rate-per-dollar-of-revenue equation. Only the most efficient hardware on cheap power survives margin compression. For the full cost picture see the Total Cost of Ownership Guide; the short version:
- Sub-$0.06/kWh power: any current-generation flagship is profitable.
- $0.06–$0.10/kWh: only the most efficient air-cooled units (Antminer S21 XP at 13.5 J/TH, Whatsminer M60S equivalent).
- Above $0.10/kWh: hydro-cooled flagships only, and even these are marginal at residential rates. Consider hosted mining instead.
